Damn... I really haven't posted anything on LJ for a while. Truth is, I've been cheating on LJ with twitter and facebook because, when it comes to blogging, I like to blog around. |

| Adventures in Veganism of the fourth kind: lime agua fresca con pimiento |
[Jun. 20th, 2009|04:47 pm] |
It's 100 degrees in Texas and I should be consuming barbeque and cheap mexican beer at Bob's. But no. Won't even tempt myself.
So, to cut the heat all "refreshing like" I concocted this limeade type agua fresca recipe:
10 key limes 3 tbs honey 3 tbs agave nectar (which, if you don't have it, you can just use more honey) enough water to fill the blender 1/2 tsp pequin ground chile (or the hot ass chile pepper of your choice) a teeny tiny bit of salt
Whirl away in the blender and taste. If it's not sweet enough, add more honey or agave until it is sweet enough. It will be tart, but pour it through a strainer into a pitcher and cut it with enough water to suit your tastes.
Serve over ice with some mint if you're all fancy.
Before we were all vegan and shit, we used to make this with regular ole' sugar or simple syrup (1 cup sugar boiled in 2-3 cups water). That said, I actually kind of prefer the new honey taste in it and by a little adventuring in the cocina, discovered that the pequin adds a nice balance and flare to it. Now, in theory, you could do this with lemons, but I live with a Mexican and lemons? We don't need no stinkin' lemons. |

| Adventures in Veganism III: The Cat Shit Smoothie |
[Jun. 14th, 2009|10:40 pm] |
It was one of *those* days. The kind that calls for chocolate and sleep.
As I survived all 10 hours of it, so as not to mess with my sugar index too much, I decided I'd probably better have a smoothie. When finished, I took a look in the blender and immediately developed a name for my creation!
The Cat Shit Smoothie
2 ripe bananas 1 ripe avocado 2 cups almond milk 2 tbs. cacao powder 1 tbs. carob powder 1 tbs. agave nectar 1 tsp. ground piquin chili pepper (or something similar) 1 cup plain, finely shredded coconut (use the organic stuff and don't use sweetened) 1/4 cup (I probably added a lot more than that) raw cacao nibs 6 dates enough ice cubes to make it thick and cold.
Instructions:
Blend.
It looks like cat poo. But it's damned good for a chocolate fix. |

| Adventures in Veganizm part deux: BLUE STEEL! |
[Jun. 8th, 2009|11:27 pm] |
I love telling people that my fat ass is on a vegan diet for the summer.
It's amazing that you'll tell people you're trying to do something healthy and they'll trip over themselves to talk you out of it. So, today's naysayer was telling me that I'm NEVER going to get enough iron and protein. In fact, I was told to buy one of those big plastic vats of powdered whey protein. (You know- the ones with some big beefcake dude in windshorts on the side?)
Now, technically, I need about 80g of protein a day. So I set about making something fast that would have a ton of iron and protein in it and created the BLUE STEEL smoothie.
Here's the mix
3 bananas (6g protein and 9% of my iron intake) 1 cup blackberries (2g protein and 7% iron) 1 cup dark cherries (2g protein and 10% iron) 1 cup blueberries (2g protein 10% iron) 2 cups spinach (4g protein and 10% iron) 3 tbs. agave nectar 8 dates enough water to make it blend.
I think 16g of protein and 46% of my daily iron intake is pretty good for a drink. It's tasty and it contains almost 30g of fiber... take that metamucil!!! |

| Adventures in Veganism part 1: Green Devil Pesto |
[Jun. 8th, 2009|12:05 am] |
I find that I am one of those people who will find a sauce, salsa, piquante, dressing and proceed to eat it on EVERYTHING. Some of you may remember my obsession with fresh mango salsa and salsa pasilla. But fortunately for the size of my ass, this has never been the case with Mayonnaise.
So, the other night, when it was too late to be truly ingenious, I developed Green Devil Pesto.
To set the stage, I don't have a food processor. That is #1 on my list of kitchen things to buy but at the moment, I'm still putting everything through a low-end blender since my hand blender died. And let me just say, Pesto is not easy to make in a blender unless you really want to add a buttload of oil, which I didn't. To add to this tragedy, I also didn't have NEARLY enough basil. But strange as it sounds, I managed to make something resembling an evil hybrid of pesto and skordalia in my shitty blender. And it's bitchin' on EVERYTHING (i'd dare say it would even be good on froots).
It's creamy, vaguely "green" flavored, and chock full of enough garlic to get your ass kicked out of the next screening of Twilight!
Anywho, here's the recipe.
1 handful pecans 1 handful raw cashews 1 handful raw almonds 8 or so raw brazil nuts 8-9 basil leaves about 1.5 - 2 cups of fresh cilantro about 1 cup chopped bok choy 1/2 cup good quality olive oil about 8 cloves of garlic (you should start with 6 and work your way up.)
...and here's the pesto heresy: water until you can get it to blend juice of one medium lime or 2 key limes
Okay, throw the nuts in the blend with the greenery and garlic. Then pour in the oil and just enough water to come about 1/3 of the way up on the ingredients. Fire up the blender and note that you will have to stop it multiple times to poke at things and jockey them around.
Blend it some more: scraping, poking and jockeying. Add water as needed only until everything is combined and will barely move continuously (albeit slowly) while the blender is on high. then squeeze in the limes (this mellow the flavor a bit).
You'll get a light green garlicky stinkin' sauce that's slightly fluffy and thick. You should put this on everything and eat it. I like it best on fresh tomatoes and carrots. This is UBER garlicky. |

| pros and cons... |
[Jun. 5th, 2009|08:24 pm] |
Day 2...
5 cool things about my raw food diet?
1. veggies, nuts & froots = good. 2. hosting your very own "will it blend?" commercials at home. (see http://www.willitblend.com/) 3. eat as much as you want. 4. righteous poops... the kind where you see Jesus. 5. Being the only vegan you know who loves pork and thinks bacon is the balm of Gilead.
5 not-cool things about my raw food diet?
1. gas 2. gas 3. gas 4. gas (oooops. I farted.) 5. gas. |

| Vegans would make great mulch for my Bacon Trees... |
[May. 29th, 2009|07:04 pm] |
Oh wait. That's right. I'm going on a vegan diet for the summer.
But please, little darlings, be thee not fooled by this. I have no intent of becoming smug and sanctimonious about not eating meaty goodness and plan to return to the consumption of meat as soon as I finish this little hiatus. And I may even break the cycle at that Brazilian joint downtown in a revelry of picanha and other meats from the parade of carne. This is only an experiment masquerading happily as a weightloss extravaganza!
Basically, I was a little concerned about my tubby ass and decided it might be time to diet. That was 6 months ago. Keeping myself down to 1600 and then 1300 calories a day augmented by exercise did precisely booshitdiddly. I, in fact, gained 10 lbs. While those who strive to maintain my chipper personae might tell me that I've probably gained muscle mass which weighs more than fat... blahdee blahdee blah... (no, really, appreciate it).... I think desperate times call for desperate measures.
Anywho, la Doctora suggested a raw foods diet for a month, then moving forward to cooked veggies and finally adding back meat and dairy. She said it might help with my evil food nemeses (soy & wheat) and also lend itself well to losing some excess poundage. And so begins this jolly pork/fish/chicken/beef/game/milk/egg/etc. free adventure.
Wish me luck. I'll probably need it. |

| Wii... v.2.0 |
[May. 16th, 2009|01:59 pm] |
Ah yes. Guess what I have, dreamlets? We have finally replaced the Wii (more like, Alex got it for me for my b-day.) And I am euphoric, I tell you... EU-PHOR-IC. Many digital sports were enjoyed yesterday evening by the Mexican and I.
